Overactive bladder (OAB) is characterized by storage symptoms of urgency, with or without urge incontinence, often associated to urinary frequency and nocturia. Clinical symptoms linked to OAB may be observed in various pathological conditions in man and reproduced in animal models of similar disease. These models share common features of altered function of urothelium, innervations and derisory smooth muscle and may partly rely on various growth factors that supply neuroplasticity. Many chemical substances may therefore provide pathological mechanisms for a neocommunication between nerves, smooth muscle and urothelium.
